The past few weeks have been hard lately.  I lost my best friend; my night time cuddle monster.

It was hard for my husband and I and especially my kids.  It was very unexpected.

Frankie became ours the same month we moved to Vegas years ago.  He was like a protective older brother to our kids.

We miss him.  We love him.

For You.

My heart is broken.  I lost my best friend.

No One Else Like You

In an interview for WWD Hal Rubenstein said,

"No one has your face. No one has your experiences. No one has your life. No one has the people around you who love you. So, in other words, there is no one else like you in the world."

This quote stuck with me, it's simple but worth sharing.

How To Reupholster Furniture

What we're going to need

The first thing we're going to need is time, a fair amount of it depending upon the size of the piece that you're going to reupholster, just like Rome wasn't built in a day, gorgeous sofa and chair upholstery is not achieved overnight (unless you have a fairy godmother).

The tools we're going to need are:

a tape measure, a ruler, a pencil, pins (lots of pins), pattern/tracing/newspaper, strong thread, material of your choice, a heavy duty staple gun, some small plastic bags or boxes, a sewing machine (or a steady hand and a good, thick needle), scissors, a camera, patience and your tool box.

Not quite a demolition derby, but close

Remember that camera? It's time to use it. Take photos of your sofa from the front, the back, sides and above as well as below. You're going to need to remember what it looks like and sadly we won't have IKEA style instructions when we place it all back together. Try to go through the dismantling with surgical precision, remove the screws from the frame and put them in in small plastic bags or boxes and label them clearly “screws from lower right hand side” for example. You'll probably want to place the couch on its back to begin with, this way you can remove the dust cover from the bottom and gain access to any screws that are there.

Remember how I mentioned coming back to your choice of material? This is where we come back to it. Now would be a good time to take some measurements, remember to add at least one inch to wherever there may be a seam or join when you note down the measurements – this will give you some leeway. Choosing a fabric may seem easy but remember you need a thicker fabric that will be durable enough to be used (and abused) by people, pets and children.

Don't forget to check the filling when stripping the previous material from your couch, older sofas have highly flammable fillings and any damaged foam will need to be replaced so you don't have an under stuffed and uncomfortable finished product.

Fairytale chores

You should be able to get a good idea of the pattern needed for your sofa from the pillows and material already on it. You can mark up the designs on the pattern paper (or newspaper) and pin it in to place, ready to be cut out and stitched together.

Using a sewing machine would be the best way to do your sewing, using a double stitch for extra strength on the seams, however if you do not have ready access you should be able to complete it the old fashioned way. Hand stitching will require quite a sturdy, thick needle – make sure you do it in a well lit room and please be careful of your fingers!

Now, take extra care when stapling the material back on to the frame, make sure to staple the material firmly with even spaces and – more importantly- keep those staples tucked out of view.

When you've stitched and stapled your wonderful new material on to your couch frame, it's time to start piecing it back together - this is where those photos come in handy! You should also have all the correct screws and joins safely tucked away in their labelled bags and boxes, it's time to break those out and begin your 3D jigsaw puzzle.

Tea Party

Now that you've finished piecing together your couch, replacing and plumping your cushions and positioning it just so, it's time to show it off. A casual way to do this would be to invite people over for a tea party or a quiet evening in with some wine, and when they remark that they didn't know you had gotten a new sofa, well, then you can feel a little glow of pride as you tell them that you reupholstered it yourself!

Sarah Connor is a whizz with soft furnishings, when she isn't hunting down the latest interior fashions she's applying them to her own home or convincing her friends that reupholstery is the way to go.

A Simple Flower in Your Hair...

A month ago I attended Magic Market Week 2013.  On the first day of Magic, I woke up late and I wasn't feeling too well.  I got ready in a rush, on days like this I always put my hair in a messy bun and stick a flower in it.  Growing up in Hawaii, this happened a lot.  Unfortunately, fresh flowers aren't easy to find in Vegas!

While walking around Magic a photographer stopped me.  He loved my flower pick and wanted to take a photo.  It totally made my day.  I was at Magic Market Week, all the amazing different styles of clothing and amazing accessories and he loved my simple flower pick!

Something so easy and simple can stand out...

"To be simple is a gift."   I learned that from my high school choral director.

A Denim Skirt in My 30s

A denim skirt is a little tricky in your 30s, with the right length, color can be done right.  A denim skirt doesn't have to be just for days at the beach or hanging out in your 20s.

Blue Suede Shoes

A little over a week ago, I mentioned that blue suede shoes have been on my wish list for quite sometime.  Guess what happened at Magic Market Week Aug. 2013...

Magic Market Week is overwhelming by itself.  However, on the second day of Magic my little princess asked sweetly, "Mommy can I come?"  Of course I had to get her a child's pass and bring her along!

Magic Market Week Aug 2013 took place at Mandalay Bay, LVH convention, and the Las Vegas Convention Center.  We started the day at Mandalay Bay, got some McDonald's, and then to the Las Vegas Convention Center.  While eating our lunch and sitting on the stairs inside the convention center I spotted the sweetest blue suede heels walk by.  When I looked up it was Kristin Cavallari!  Nearby, she was presenting her new footwear collection with Chinese Laundry.  She talked about her favorites from the collection, which actually included quite a few pretty flats.

How sweet are these:
